Claritine

Claritine is a medication that is used to treat allergies. It can also be combined with a decongestant, which will help to relieve colds but does cause certain side effects such as nervousness, insomnia and anxiety. Claritine is manufactured by the company Schering-Plough as well as Shionogi in Japan.

This medication is available as an over-the-counter medication in most areas including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico and Australia.

Claritine is prescribed to patients in order to get rid of symptoms that are associated with seasonal allergies such as sneezing, itchy nose, throat or eyes, runny nose or watery eyes. The medication works as an antihistamine by blocking histamine action within the body which in turn causes the symptoms of allergies to lessen.

It is important that your doctor is aware of any medical conditions you may have, especially kidney issues, liver problems as well as any allergies to medications or foods. In addition, your doctor should be aware if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Also, your doctor will need to know of any types of medications you are currently taking, prescription or non-prescription as well as vitamins, minerals and supplements you are taking.

There are some important safety aspects of Claritine to consider before taking. It is important that you take this medication as directed on the package and package insert information. If you take more than what is recommended, you will be subjected to extreme drowsiness. If you are scheduled to have a skin test done for allergies, this medication may interfere with this type of test. Your doctor may have you cease taking the medication a few days before your scheduled test. The safety and effectiveness of Claritine has not been confirmed in children under the age of six years old. You should not give children of this age group this medication unless you consult with your doctor first.

There are some medications that may interact with Claritine such as Amiodarone. Taking Claritine and Amiodarone together increases the risk of being exposed to serious irregular heartbeat.

As with most medications, there are some risks of side effects with Claritine. Most side effects are tolerable and will go away with time. If the side effects do not go away within a few days or they get worse, you will need to notify your doctor right away. Some of the most common side effects include headache, drowsiness, weakness, sore throat and dry mouth.

There are some side effects that are rare but may be more serious in nature. If you experience any of these, you will need to stop taking Claritine and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention. These side effects include severe allergic reaction and extreme dizziness.
